Michael Hickey

Michael Hickey  is a founding member and principal performer with Gateway Performance Productions – an award-winning theatre company based in Atlanta specializing in mask and mime theatre. He has performed at festivals, theatres, schools, arts centers, libraries museums, universities and community sites throughout the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Eastern and Western Europe and for Public Television.

 

As a principal performer with Gateway, Michaels’s career includes performances at the Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian, performances at Lincoln Center For The Performing Arts, and performances at Wolftrap National Performance Park. Michael has performed at International Festivals in Oaxaca, Mexico, Victoria, B.C., Canada, Bled and Lublijaana, Slovenia, Budapest, Hungary, Amsterdam, Holland, Isle of Jute, Scotland, 1st European International Mask Theatre Festival, Aeroe Island, Denmark and West Belfast, N.Ireland. From 2001 through 2006 Michael performed annually for a Peace Process Project in Northern Ireland.

 

As a national award-winning mask-maker, he has created masks for Gateway and for theatres throughout Georgia and the U.S. His creations have been displayed at the Corcoran Gallery, Washington, D.C., the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, the Iowa State Art Museum, The Habitat Gallery, West Palm Beach and The Hummingbird Gallery, Santa Fe.

 

Since 1975, He has taught mask-making and mime, as well as designed custom residencies, for students at all educational levels, throughout Georgia, the United States, Mexico, Canada, Belgium, Germany, Spain, Italy, Slovenia, Hungary, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Michael, with Gateway Performance Productions has performed and taught, under the auspices of Young Audiences in northern Ohio, New Orleans, Atlanta and New York City. Michael has been an Artist in Residence at Emory University, Lake Erie College, Antioch College and the Universidad Autonoma Metropolitana de Ixtapalapa in Mexico City.

 

His background includes: Advanced mime seminars on scholarship with Marcel Marceau, an acting and theatrical design apprenticeship at the Kenley Players (Ohio), Theatre training at the pre-professional program at Ohio University, mime training with Israeli Mime Juki Arkin, dance training with Valentina Litvinoff from Isadora Duncan's Russian School,  dance with Jerry Burr of the Netherlands Dance Company, Visual art and sculpture training at the Cleveland Institute of Art and Georgia State University.
